Which Messaging Apps Transcribe Voice Notes Natively (and Which Don't)
WhatsApp and Telegram both transcribe voice notes inside the app, each with limits: WhatsApp restricts languages on Android, and Telegram's free plan allows two transcriptions per week. WhatsApp Business does not transcribe voice notes at all.
Which messaging apps transcribe voice notes natively?
Here is the short version, based on what each app documents as of August 2026. It covers the apps most people ask about in Brazil, Germany, Spain, Italy, the UK and the US.
- WhatsApp (iPhone): yes, in a wider set of languages, as long as Siri is enabled on the phone.
- WhatsApp (Android): yes, but only for English, Portuguese, Spanish and Russian.
- WhatsApp Business: no native transcription of voice notes.
- Telegram (free): yes, limited to two transcriptions per week.
- Telegram Premium: yes, without the weekly limit.
For everything else, the reliable rule is simple: long-press a voice message and look for a transcribe option. If it is not there, the app does not transcribe that message natively, and you need a workaround.
The sections below explain each case, so you can jump straight to the app you use.
WhatsApp: why Android and iPhone support different languages
WhatsApp voice message transcripts work on both platforms, but the language coverage is not the same.
- On Android, transcripts are available only for English, Portuguese, Spanish and Russian. A voice note in Italian or German, for example, will not get a transcript on an Android phone.
- On iPhone, more languages are supported, but the feature depends on Siri. If Siri is turned off, the transcript option may not appear.
To turn the feature on, open WhatsApp settings, go to Chats, and enable voice message transcripts. Then long-press a voice note and choose Transcribe.
This explains a common confusion: two people in the same group chat can see different results. An iPhone user may get a transcript of an Italian voice note while an Android user gets nothing.
If the option is missing or the transcript fails, our guide on fixing WhatsApp voice note transcription walks through the usual causes.
Step by step
-
Open the voice note
In WhatsApp, WhatsApp Business or Telegram, long-press the voice message you want as text.
-
Tap Share
Choose Share or Forward to another app, depending on the messenger and platform.
-
Pick your transcription app
Select a transcription app such as Zeepit from the share sheet on iPhone or Android.
-
Read, copy or translate
Read the transcript and summary, copy or share them, or translate the text if needed.
Telegram: two free transcriptions a week, more with Premium
Telegram shows a small transcription button next to voice messages. Tap it and the text appears under the audio.
The catch is the quota. According to Telegram's own developer documentation:
- Free accounts can transcribe two voice messages per week.
- Telegram Premium subscribers can transcribe voice messages without that weekly cap.
In practice, two per week is enough to try the feature, not to rely on it. If you receive several long voice notes a day, for work, family or a study group, you will hit the limit quickly.
Once the free quota is used, the button still appears but asks you to upgrade. There is no setting that resets it early.
Telegram, like WhatsApp, lets you share a voice message to other apps on your phone. That matters when the quota runs out, because you can still get the text elsewhere without paying for a messaging subscription you may not otherwise need.
WhatsApp Business and message summaries: what is not covered
Two gaps catch people out.
WhatsApp Business has no voice note transcription
The transcript feature available in standard WhatsApp is not offered in WhatsApp Business. This is frustrating for shops, freelancers and support teams, who often receive the most voice notes from customers. There is no setting to switch it on.
We cover practical options in transcribing WhatsApp Business voice notes.
Message summaries do not mention voice
Meta announced message summaries for WhatsApp in June 2025. The announcement describes summaries of unread text messages; it does not mention voice messages. So you should not expect a summary to tell you what a voice note says.
If you need both the full text and a short summary of a voice note, you currently need a tool outside the messaging app.
How to check whether your messenger can transcribe a voice note
Messaging apps change often, and features roll out by region, platform and app version. Before assuming your app cannot transcribe, run this quick check:
- Update the app from the App Store or Google Play.
- Look in settings under chats or accessibility for a voice transcript option, and enable it.
- Long-press a voice message. If a Transcribe or similar option appears, the feature is available.
- Check the language. A transcript that works in English may not work in German or Italian, as with WhatsApp on Android.
- Check your plan. Some apps, such as Telegram, limit transcriptions on free accounts.
If none of these steps reveals a transcript option, the app does not support native transcription for that message on your phone. That is common, and it does not mean you have to listen to every voice note. The next section shows the workaround that works with any messaging app.
What to do when your app does not transcribe a voice note
Every major messaging app lets you share a voice message to another app. That is the universal fix: send the audio to a transcription app and read the text there.
With Zeepit, on iPhone or Android, you tap Share on the voice note in WhatsApp, WhatsApp Business, Telegram or another app, then choose Zeepit. There is nothing to upload from a computer and nothing to convert: opus, ogg, m4a, aac and amr voice files are accepted directly.
You get:
- the full transcript, word for word;
- an instant summary (short, medium or long);
- a translation if the voice note is in another language.
Language is detected automatically, and recordings up to 4 hours are accepted. Your first conversions are free after install, with no account, no card and no ads.
On privacy: the file is sent to Zeepit's servers, transcribed and deleted right after, with no AI training on your recordings. Transcripts stay on your phone.
Frequently asked questions
Does WhatsApp transcribe voice messages in every language?
No. On Android, WhatsApp transcribes only English, Portuguese, Spanish and Russian voice messages. On iPhone more languages are supported, but Siri must be enabled. A voice note in Italian or German may get a transcript on iPhone and none on Android.
How many voice messages can I transcribe for free on Telegram?
Telegram's free plan allows two voice message transcriptions per week, according to its developer documentation. Telegram Premium removes that weekly limit. Once the free quota is used, you need Premium or another way to get the text, such as sharing the voice note to a transcription app.
Why can't I transcribe voice notes in WhatsApp Business?
WhatsApp Business does not include the voice message transcript feature found in standard WhatsApp, and there is no setting to enable it. The practical workaround is to share the voice note from WhatsApp Business to a transcription app on your phone and read the text there.
Do WhatsApp message summaries include voice messages?
Meta's June 2025 announcement of WhatsApp message summaries describes summaries of unread messages and does not mention voice messages. Do not count on it to summarize what a voice note says; a separate app that produces a transcript and summary is more reliable.
How can I transcribe a voice note if my app has no transcript option?
Share the voice note from the messaging app to a transcription app. Zeepit, on iPhone and Android, accepts voice formats like opus, ogg and m4a directly, detects the language automatically and returns a full transcript plus an instant summary. Your first conversions are free after install.
