Why WhatsApp voice note transcription stops working

WhatsApp produces the transcript on your phone, using the speech recognition built into iOS or Android. Nothing is typed out on a server, which is good for privacy and is also the reason the feature is fragile.

Three conditions have to be met at the same time:

Transcripts are switched on in WhatsApp settings.
A transcript language is selected and fully downloaded to the device.
The phone and its operating system are recent enough to run that speech engine.

Miss one and you land in one of two situations: the transcript option is nowhere to be found, or it is there and gives you nothing usable. The rest of this guide is split along those two lines.

Worth knowing before you start: transcripts live on the device. Switching phones, reinstalling the app or opening the same chat elsewhere will not bring old transcripts with you.

Where the transcript setting lives on iPhone and Android

Open WhatsApp, tap Settings, then Chats, and look for Voice message transcripts. The switch sits in the same area on iPhone and Android, and just under it you choose the transcript language.

The language step is the one most people skip. Choosing it starts a download of a speech pack, and transcripts will not work until that download finishes. On a weak connection or a phone that is nearly full, it can fail quietly and leave you with a switch that is on and a feature that does nothing.

Once it is ready:

iPhone: tap the arrow at the end of the voice note bubble to expand the text underneath.
Android: press and hold the voice note, then pick the transcribe option.

Labels move around between releases, so if the wording does not match exactly, look for any menu entry containing the word transcript.

Step by step

Update WhatsApp and your phone software
Open the App Store or Play Store and update WhatsApp by hand. Then install any pending iOS or Android update. The transcript feature depends on both, and automatic updates often lag behind.
Turn on voice message transcripts
In WhatsApp, go to Settings, then Chats, then Voice message transcripts, and switch the feature on. The option sits in the same place on iPhone and Android.
Pick and download the transcript language

Restart, then test on a clean recording
Restart the phone and try a short, clearly spoken note recorded indoors. If that one works, the earlier failures were about noise, length or language, not your settings.
Share to another app for the rest

The transcript option never appears: what it means

If there is no transcript switch in Settings and no transcribe option on a voice note, the feature has not reached your phone. The usual reasons:

An old app version. Update WhatsApp by hand from the App Store or Play Store instead of waiting for an automatic update.
An old operating system. The on-device speech engine needs a reasonably recent iOS or Android.
An unsupported language. Only some languages are available for transcripts. If yours is not among them, the option can stay hidden.
A staged rollout. Features arrive on different phones at different times, region by region.
No free storage. The speech pack needs room. Clear space, then try again.

Update, restart the phone, then look once more. If it is still missing, stop chasing it: nothing you change inside WhatsApp will force a feature the phone cannot run. Use a separate app for the notes you actually need in writing.

Why the transcript is empty, garbled or in the wrong language

A transcript that appears but is useless almost always comes down to a mismatch or a poor recording.

Wrong language selected. WhatsApp transcribes with one language at a time. If the setting says English and the note is in Portuguese, German, Spanish or Italian, you get nonsense or nothing. Change it, and expect a new download.
Noise and distance. Street noise, a phone in a pocket, several people talking over each other: on-device recognition gives up faster than you would expect.
Very short or very long notes. A two second note may return an empty result, and a long one may stop partway.
The phone is busy. Battery saver modes and heavy background activity can delay or cancel the job. Plug in and retry.

If the same note fails twice with the correct language selected, the recording itself is the limit, not your settings.

Voice notes WhatsApp will not transcribe at all

Some audio is simply out of scope, and no setting will change that:

Audio sent as a file. An mp3 or m4a shared as a document is not a voice note, so the transcribe option usually does not show up on it.
Notes you have not downloaded. Tap the download arrow first. There is nothing to transcribe until the audio is on the phone.
Video messages. The feature is built around recorded voice notes, not video.
WhatsApp on a computer. Transcripts depend on the phone speech engine, so do not count on finding them in a browser window.
Languages that are not covered. This is the most common blocker outside English.
